    Traveling While Black

Traveling While Black & American: Egypt Edition

In an effort to shed light on a lens that I travel everywhere with, I decided that it was important for me to explicitly talk about My Black American Traveler Experience. I want to stress that everyone has their own experiences and biases traveling to any country. Therefore, my experience may not be your own. In specifying the Black American identity, I acknowledge that while there are some commonalities in experiences as Black people, there is also privilege that comes with being an American. I am supplementing my thoughts and experiences with a context on demographics as I think that it is important in order to paint the whole picture of traveling while black

Traveling While Black: Detroit Black Owned Guide

When I think of Detroit, I automatically think of black history. Motown anyone? Detroit is literally the second blackest city in the USA with 78.8% of the population being black, right under Jackson, Mississippi and right above Birmingham, Alabama. Detroit is the only city on the top ten list list that is north of the Mason-Dixon line. Interestingly, it is also the largest city in the top 10. As a result, you cannot explore #Detroit without exploring Black Detroit!

Traveling While Black: Baltimore Black Owned Guide

When I think of Baltimore, I think of Black folk! In fact, it is one of the blackest cities in the USA, sixth place to be exact. However, this shift did not occur until the 1970’s. Considering the number of black people in Baltimore, it is not noticeable in the number of black owned businesses. As a result, you have to make an active effort to explore Black Baltimore!

Franny the Traveler Turns 1: Reflections from 1st Blogaversary

I had wanted to launch a travel blog since early 2016. I had been inundated with people asking me to suggest destinations that I may or may not have traveled to. As the number of places accumulated, I figured that my #blog could be a go-to source that I can refer people to. Hey, maybe I can be cited as a source one day!

Traveling While Black: Portugal Black Owned Guide

I did not know what I was in for when I traveled to Portugal for 10 days! Seeing black travelers posting flicks on Instagram and watching fellow travel snap chatters covering Lisbon, I assumed that Portugal was super diverse. Social media deceived me, and it hit me hard real quick!

    Owning Your Travel Privilege

The “travel is a privilege” topic is a very hot topic over the internet. Just with a simple Google search, you can easily come across tens of articles debating whether travel is a privilege or a right. However, one thing I notice is that the majority of these articles is written by white, middle class travelers. I have nothing against such travelers but I think the discussion of traveling as a privilege looks a little differently from the perspective of a black woman.

My Journey; Unapologetic Plus Size Traveler!

Being a Black woman AND being plus size has contributed equally to my identity since childhood. Growing up, I was always what many would consider fatter, curvier, thicker {insert your own adjective} than most people in my circles of friends.

    Joining the Blogger/Travelgrammer World!

Many of you are probably thinking, "oh God, here is another travel blog or Instagram account." Well...yes, it is and you have the right to say that. We all have our motivations for doing things. DISCLAIMER: I don't typically do things to follow trends. In fact, I am often the last one to hop on the bandwagon and by then, it may not even be a trend (por ejemplo: Twilight) -_-.

How Does Travel and STEM Connect?

"Science is not a boy's game, it's not a girl's game. It's everyone's game. It's about where we are and where we're going."

    My Travel Bug Story

My strong desire to travel is not just an impulse, but a long deferred desire to see the world. Growing up, I loved learning about various cultures, largely because I did not have the opportunity to travel across the country or around the world. Born and raised in Brooklyn, my mom and I traveled locally, hopping on buses to explore different neighborhoods or on the subway to explore other boroughs or the tri state area. These experiences alone not only provided me with a greater appreciation for different cultures, but also increased my desire to travel at greater extents.
